In part 3, I mentioned that sometimes managers will block people’s movement because they are “too important” where they are at.
What the hell kind of excuse is that?!? This frustrates me to no end.
Your great employees will make moves when they are ready whether you want them to or not. Once someone realizes that your value does not lie within the job you are currently in, organizations that refuse to empower their employees start to lose out on some serious talent.
The flip side of the coin, if you are an employee in the middle of a project and try to use your importance to that as leverage and threaten leaving in order make more, you are equally shitty.
Mini rant over.
If you have lost track, we have now found someone worth mentoring, pushed them to be better and potentially had to go out on a limb to get them to this point. As far as this little series is concerned, this is the last part. Depending on the individual, this process can sort of loop around for a long time or can be relatively painless. I think that everything eventually ends here.
#4 Once they are ready, you will have to let them fly on their own and this may mean in a capacity where you no longer work together.
I have been fortunate enough to not have had to completely become severed from those I have created this mentoring relationship with, but usually our interaction will dampen severely. It’s the nature of the beast.
It’s incredibly enjoyable to watch these people go out and really flourish in their careers. We are so much more than what we do. These concepts don’t just exist in an “at work” capacity. As the world get’s smaller through social media, you are able to still see into their continued success in life. At this point on a higher level, their success is still your success.
This one is short and sweet. I will probably have a follow up post to this whole thing because I have had quite a few awesome mentors and champions in my life that are worth talking about. Sometimes, we are on the other side of the battle and looking for someone to champion us, so I will go through how you can do that.
